OAKS Foundation is a nonprofit organization focused on preserving Indigenous Nigerian languages and promoting cultural heritage. We work on research-driven initiatives to document history, reintroduce Indigenous languages into education, and advocate for cultural preservation.

Job Overview

As a Researcher, you will play a critical role in gathering, analyzing, and organizing information that informs the storytelling and documentation of TruMemories’ legacy projects and OAKS Foundation’s historical and linguistic preservation efforts. You will conduct in-depth research on personal histories, ancestral roots, cultural traditions, and language documentation.

Key Responsibilities

For TruMemories Projects:

1. Conduct oral history interviews with individuals, families, and communities.

2. Research historical events, family lineages, and personal legacies to enrich memoirs and biographies.

3. Verify historical facts, dates, and details to maintain authenticity and accuracy.

4. Collaborate with writers to integrate research findings into compelling narratives.

5. Use archives, libraries, and digital databases to gather relevant information.

For OAKS Foundation Projects:

1. Conduct ethnographic and linguistic research on endangered Nigerian languages.

2. Work with historians, linguists, and cultural experts to document traditional stories and language structures.

3. Research education policies and historical changes affecting Indigenous languages.

4. Collect data from community elders, Indigenous speakers, and academic sources.

5. Assist in creating reports, whitepapers, and educational materials for advocacy.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong research and analytical skills in history, culture, linguistics, or genealogy.
  • Ability to conduct interviews and gather oral histories.
  • Experience working with historical records, archives, and academic sources.
  • Excellent writing and documentation skills to present research findings effectively.
  • Background in history, anthropology, linguistics, African studies, or genealogy is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and meet research deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with historical writing, biographies, or Indigenous studies.
  • Knowledge of genealogical research techniques.
  • Familiarity with research tools, digital archives, and library databases.
  • Passion for storytelling, cultural preservation, and language documentation.

Travel Requirements
